Premium DNA Jurist Session - And now, Portugal: presidential elections, press, social networks and disinformation

Thursday, December 17, 2020 - 17:30

Online

After the US presidential elections, and with the Portuguese elections already in January, we ask again: how will misinformation, social networks and populism influence our election? After what we saw in the US elections, what is the role of the mainstream media in this context? And given the emergence of extreme right wing parties in a European context, is there any reason to consider Portugal more immune to these movements? What are the challenges for citizens and democracies?

As part of the ADN Jurista programme, we will have another Premium Session, this time with two special guests:

Marina Costa Lobo

Marina Costa Lobo, political scientist, holds a PhD in Political Science from Oxford University, with a thesis on the Prime Minister's power and the functioning of government in democratic Portugal. She is currently a Principal Researcher at the Institute of Social Sciences where she develops work in the area of the institutions and political behaviour of the Portuguese. She has published on political institutions in Portugal, political parties and the EU, and on the impact of leaders on voting behaviour. She is a recognized author of works that look at the electoral behaviour of the Portuguese, including the millennial generation.

Paulo Pena

Paulo Pena, journalist. Worked as a major reporter for Visão, Público and Diário de Notícias. Paulo has won several awards (for his reports on the Genoa G8 Summit, the Icelandic banking crash and labour market reforms), most recently the Gazeta journalism award for his reporting on the Portuguese banking scandal. He is one of the founders of the European cross-border team of investigative reporters, Investigate Europe. He has written two other non-fiction books, the latest on the disinformation machine and the power of online platforms ("Fábrica de Mentiras: viagem ao mundo das fake news").
