Assistive Technologies: Principles and Practice – 5th edition of the book co-authored by Pedro Encarnação

For the last 12 years, CATÓLICA-LISBON researcher Pedro Encarnação has been working in the area of Assistive Technologies i.e., products, instruments, equipment, or technologies adapted or specially designed for improving the functioning of disabled people. Examples of his research efforts are the project UARPIE where he lead an international team in developing an integrated augmentative manipulation and communication robotic assistive technology to enable disabled children to participate in academic activities along with their peers, and the COST Action LUDI where he co-chaired a pan-European team of more than 100 researchers and practitioners dedicated to the study of play for children with disabilities.

This year, Pedro Encarnação joined Albert Cook (Professor Emeritus, University of Alberta, Canada) and Janice Polgar (Professor Emerita, Western University, Canada) for the fifth edition of the seminal book Assistive Technologies: Principles and Practice published by Elsevier. For 25 years this book has been a reference all over the world in the area, with a comprehensive coverage of the Assistive Technology field focusing on the relationship between the human user and the assisted activity within specific contexts. The new edition features thoroughly updated chapters to reflect current technology and practice, an expanded discussion on assistive robotics and smart technologies, and a review of global initiatives on Assistive Technology.
