ESB student projects at the final of the Health INNOVAtion Awards

Two projects developed by students from Escola Superior de Biotecnologia of Universidade Católica Portuguesa in Porto were selected for the final of the Health INNOVAtion Awards, an idea accelerator that promotes innovation in the Health sector, which takes place on September 22, 2020.

The students of the 2nd year of the Degree in Bioengineering - Ana Catarina Lopes Ramos, Ana Sofia Fontes da Silva, Áurea Filipa Oliveira Covas, Maria Inês Silva Lopes da Fonte and Simone Conceição da Costa Sá - developed the APP - SIGnal Monitoring Analysis APP for cardiac diseases, a system capable of analyzing a set of fundamental parameters in the life of any person who has cardiac problems. Through this smartphone application it is possible to measure in a safe and fast way the oxygen level, blood pressure, temperature or respiratory rate. A project also guided by Professor Pedro Rodrigues.

Under the guidance of Professor Pedro Rodrigues, the students of the Master in Biomedical Engineering - Gabriel Silva and Marco Alves - developed the project NeuroSDR - Software for rapid and early detection of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases through the analysis of EEG signals. Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD) are the main causes of dementia in the elderly. This type of disease causes cell death, which can have an impact on memory, cognitive thinking and motor functions. Specifically, 75% of the world's cases of dementia come from these two diseases.
