Escola Superior de Biotecnologia committed to the fight against Covid-19

In line with what was announced last week by the President of the Porto Regional Centre of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, several researchers, professors, students and collaborators are on the front line to help fight the COVID-19 pandemic. Today we present the work being developed by the Associated Laboratory CBQF, of the Escola Superior de Biotecnologia of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa.

From the first moment embracing the integration of the project "SciPT Task Force against COVID-19", several researchers from CBQF have joined efforts to provide materials and equipment. The objective of this Task Force, which integrates several research institutes from all over the country, is to facilitate access to different available resources, so that the units certified to make Covid-19 diagnosis can perform as many tests as possible. Several researchers from CBQF have also registered as volunteers to participate in this joint effort.

In concerted action with the Centro Hospitalar Universitário de São João, CBQF also joined the initiative carried out by several research institutes in the North region, in the production of means of transportation for the Covid-19 diagnostic swabs, and in the production of visors for the protection of health professionals. It has been with great commitment and spirit of mission that several researchers and collaborators of CBQF have given themselves to these tasks, from which benefit the Hospital de São João and other hospitals in the North region.

During this week:

  • More than 25,000 tubes with swab transport medium were produced to support SARS-CoV-2 sampling;
  • More than 100 visors have been produced by 3D printing.
