Filipe Santos, Dean of CATÓLICA-LISBON wins scientific award of the decade given by Academy of Management
The Academy of Management has announced that Professor Filipe Santos, Dean of the Católica Lisbon School of Business & Economics, won this year the award of the decade by the Academy of Management Review, the world's most prestigious scientific journal for theoretical research in management, for his scientific article published in 2010 entitled: "WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE: THE INTERNAL DYNAMICS OF ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSES TO CONFLICTING INSTITUTIONAL DEMANDS".
This award is given annually to the scientific paper published ten years earlier in the Academy of Management Review that has become the most cited in the world. The article by Professor Filipe Santos, written in co-authorship with Professor Anne-Claire Pache, has already received more than 1600 citations on Google Scholar.
In this article, the authors explain how modern organizations are confronted with an increasingly complex institutional context of pressure forces that push them in different strategic directions. How can organizations respond to simultaneous pressures to maximize profits, respond to environmental and societal challenges, respect professional standards, protect personal data, promote open innovation models, among many others? This challenge is particularly important for entities of a hybrid nature, such as public companies, private companies operating in regulated sectors, social organizations operating in the market, or private hospitals that provide a public good and are subject to strong professional standards.
The article argues that the strategic response of each organization will depend on its own internal dynamics of these pressure forces, and may lead to situations of intense conflict and even dissolution of the organization. The authors develop a model that allows predicting the strategic response and impact on the organization depending on its specific situation. This article has become one of the central references in management research linked to issues of institutional complexity and hybrid organizations.
The scientific research of Professor Filipe Santos on the topics of entrepreneurship and social innovation has already received over 9600 citations (Google scholar) and he is the only Portuguese researcher in Economics and Management present in the 2019 list of High Impact Researchers, which rewards researchers with more impact in the world.
