Prime Minister speaks at UCP on the Presidency of the Council of the European Union

António Costa, Prime Minister of Portugal, was today, November 23, at the Portuguese Catholic University to address the theme "Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2021". The conference, organized by the Institute of Political Studies (IEP), was moderated by José Manuel Durão Barroso and was attended by Isabel Capeloa Gil, Rector of UCP, and João Carlos Espada, Director of IEP.

During the session, António Costa shared his vision for the Portuguese presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of next year, stating that there is a division on the future of Europe between member states that want "common values" and others with a merely economic idea, admitting that the solution will be "variable geometries" of integration. He also shared that the most complex and least effective path would be to opt for a thorough reform of the 2007 Lisbon Treaty, as "it remains a sufficiently versatile basis".

This conference was held under the following Curriculum Units:

  • Statistics;
  • Public Policies;
  • International Relations Theory;
  • The Tradition of Great Books.

The event took place in mixed format, so the students enrolled in the curricular units in person had the opportunity to attend the Conference in the Auditorium, and the rest of the public could attend online, on the Zoom platform.
