UCP Libraries and the Management of Science

The UCP Libraries, in line with the strategic objectives defined by the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, have been working on two main guiding principles, support for research and the promotion of Open Science, which have resulted in the creation of new services and the updating of practices and procedures.

The UCP Libraries suggest the use of a set of tools that enhance Open Science during the research cycle:

Discovery

OpenAIRE	Provides access to Open Access research content. It is based on OpenAIRE's open scholarly communication graph that includes all research and scholarly activities, ranging all phases of the research life cycle. Search for publications, datasets, software and other research outputs. See how these are linked together and how they are linked to funding and organizations. View statistics on projects and institutions.
Unpaywall	Unpaywall harvest Open Access content from over 50,000 publishers and repositories, and make it easy to find, track, and use.

Analysis

Amnesia	Amnesia is a data anonymization tool that transforms databases to dataset where formal privacy guaranties hold.
Argos	ARGOS is an online tool in support of automated processes to create, manage, share and link Data Management Plans with the research artifacts they correspond to. This Data Management Plan addresses FAIR and Open best practices and assumes no barriers for its use and adoption.

Writing

Mendeley	It’s a free reference manager that can help you store, organize, note, share and cite references and research data.
Zotero	Free and open-source software to store, organize, manage, and share bibliographic references, also allowing to automatically create citations and the respective bibliographies.

Publication

Creative Common	Every Creative Commons license helps creators retain copyright while allowing others to copy, distribute, and make some uses of their work. Every Creative Commons These licenses also ensure licensors get credit for their work. they deserve.
Directory of Open Access Journals	DOAJ is a community-curated online directory that indexes and provides access to high quality, open access, peer-reviewed journals.
Sherpa Romeo	Sherpa Romeo is an online resource that aggregates and analyses publisher open access policies from around the world and provides summaries of publisher copyright and open access archiving policies on a journal-by-journal basis.

Outreach

DataCite	Plataforma de atribuição e gestão de identificadores persistentes (DOIs) a dados de investigação, produção científica e outros tipos de produção. A Universidade Católica Portuguesa atribui DOIs, de forma gratuita, a pedido dos autores através do endereço ciencia@ucp.pt.
Zenodo	Zenodo is an open dissemination research data repository that allows researchers to deposit research papers, data sets, research software, reports, and any other research related digital artefacts. For each submission, a persistent digital object identifier (DOI) is minted, which makes the stored items easily citeable.

Assessment

Altmetrics	Altmetrics are metrics and qualitative data that are complementary to traditional, citation-based metrics. They can include (but are not limited to) peer reviews on Faculty of 1000, citations on Wikipedia and in public policy documents, discussions on research blogs, mainstream media coverage, bookmarks on reference managers like Mendeley, and mentions on social networks such as Twitter.
PlumX	PlumX Metrics provide insights into the ways people interact with individual pieces of research output (articles, conference proceedings, book chapters, and many more) in the online environment. Examples include when research is mentioned in the news or is tweeted about. Collectively known as PlumX Metrics, these metrics are divided into five categories to help make sense of the huge amounts of data involved and to enable analysis by comparing like with like.

Open Science enables the sharing of knowledge among the scientific community, society and business, thereby enhancing the recognition and social and economic impact of science. Open Science is more than the open access of data and publications, it is the opening of the scientific process as a whole, reinforcing the concept of scientific social responsibility. Open Science is based on 4 pillars: Open Access, Research Data, Citizen Science and Responsibility in Research and Innovation.

Data sets used in scientific research as primary sources, area commonly accepted in the scientific community as necessary to validate research results. They are retrieved and produced in a wide range of formats: digital data sets, databases, survey results, images or objects.

The Foundation for Science and Technology has issued a recommendation for the availability of research data. The European Commission, under Horizon 2020, has allowed researchers responsible for European projects to choose to make the data produced available.

To share good research data sets require good management during the project and several science funders are already requesting a Data Management Plan in the application process. ARGOS and DMPonline platform are compatible with the requirements of most funders.

The big challenge is the quality of the data produced. In 2016, the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) were developed and serve as guidelines for the scientific community during the process of data management and sharing.

The Zenodo platform is a free multidisciplinary research data repository where researchers can deposit their data in various formats. Zenodo is compatible with European Commission projects and meets FAIR principles.

The UCP Libraries provide support services in the management of Research data, from the creation of Data Management Plans to long-term preservation in repositories recognized by funding agencies.

The goal is to involve the common citizens in scientific research projects. Through the computer or mobile phone, science is one step closer to the citizen. Doing science is no longer just for scientists, but for everyone who wants to be part of it.

The UCP Libraries can assist in the use of a set of resources related to Open Science to facilitate access to information and community.

Given the importance of the impact of scientific production, the UCP Libraries provide support in obtaining and interpreting quartiles, Impact Factor, CiteScore and alternative metrics (Altmetrics and PlumX).

The UCP Libraries support the use of several Open Access journal directories, namely Sherpa/Romeo and Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), allowing compliance with the Open Access policies of funding agencies, (ex.: FCT or European Commission).

The UCP Libraries help researchers select the Creative Commons License that best suits their research outputs (articles, books, posters, conference contributions).

The UCP Libraries assist in the selection of scientific journals to publish. The recommendations are given by taking into consideration the indexing on Scopus and Web of Science, as well as the publishers’ Open Access policies.

Considering the need to adapt the way of presenting institutional affiliation to R&D indexing techniques in international databases, the Dispatch ADM/0381/2019 determines that in all research outputs the following affiliation must be used:

Universidade Católica Portuguesa, (Faculty), (Research Unit), Portugal

The designation “Universidade Católica Portuguesa” must always be included (mandatory and first position in the affiliation), always in Portuguese, and the use of any other form of abbreviation of the name of the University is not allowed;
The sequence of the defined hierarchy, Faculty, Institute and Research Unit, should be used. They may appear as second and third affiliations if there is enough space, but never to the detriment of the omission of the designation “Universidade Católica Portuguesa”;
Always use commas to separate the different designations;
Faculty, Institute and Research Unit are optional affiliations and the author may choose not to include one or more of them, but always respecting the order presented;
Optional affiliations (i.e., Faculty, Institute, Research Unit) must have the designation shown in the attached table (in Portuguese or English), and the use of any other designations is not allowed;
The affiliation must obligatorily end with the indication of the country, which must be in all cases “Portugal”, without any further type of regional indication.
