From Ukraine to Portugal | Sam Izadloo’s testimony on World Refugee Day

On World Refugee Day, installed by the United Nations, we pay homage to refugees all over the world who are forced to flee their homes due to war and conflict. At Universidade Católica Portuguesa, Sam Izadloo is an example of that courage.

A Ukrainian refugee, Sam was forced to flee his homeland, and that made him question whether he could fulfill his dreams. But that changed thanks to Católica’s refugee scholarship programme.

“The moment I stepped onto the campus of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, everything changed. It was as if I had found a new lease on life, a renewed sense of purpose, and a community where I truly belonged,” Sam, now studying Medicine at Católica Medical School shares.

To highlight this date, Universidade Católica Portuguesa shares a text written by Sam Izadloo for the meeting with the President of UCP, Isabel Capeloa Gil, on International Day of Human Fraternity, 2nd of February.

“Esteemed rector, esteemed faculty members, and fellow students,

I am deeply honored to stand before you today, representing the student body of this esteemed university.

As I look around this room, I am filled with a profound sense of gratitude for the opportunity to pursue my lifelong passion for medicine. The journey to reach this point has been filled with obstacles and trials, and I am deeply thankful for the unwavering support and guidance that have accompanied me along the way.

There were moments when the onset of war in Ukraine made me question whether I would ever be able to realize my dreams. However, the moment I stepped onto the campus of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, everything changed. It was as if I had found a new lease on life, a renewed sense of purpose, and a community where I truly belonged.

The environment of this university, with its rich history and unwavering commitment to academic excellence, has been nothing short of inspiring.

The commitment of the faculty and the diverse chances for learning and development have genuinely changed the way I experience education.

Católica has given me and others the opportunity to learn from some of the brightest minds in the field and to engage in thought-provoking discussions that have expanded my horizons in ways I never thought possible. The support and encouragement that I have received here have instilled in me the confidence to pursue my ambitions and to strive for excellence in all my endeavors.

But what I'm experiencing today with excitement and stability was not my reality a year ago, the financial burden of pursuing higher education at the time seemed daunting, and I am deeply grateful for the scholarship that has made our education here possible.

The opportunity to receive this scholarship has not only changed my life but has also opened doors that are not typically available to individuals in my circumstances.

The initiative undertaken by Católica to provide scholarships to refugee students has been both inspiring and unconventional from a cultural perspective.

Unlike some cultures that confine their assistance to specific groups, Católica's inclusive approach aligns with the teachings of the Bible.

Having previously witnessed the dysfunctional involvement of religion with politics in Iran, Católica stands as the only institution that has transformed my views about religion.

The initiatives here transcend cultural boundaries, embracing the essence of support for others, regardless of their beliefs or religion. In a world where cultural differences often dictate the extent of aid, Católica stands out as one of the few institutions successfully picturing the universal message of compassion and assistance for all.

As reflected in Galatians 3:28 from the New Testament, our university embodies the idea that in the eyes of faith, all individuals are equal and deserving of love and respect, regardless of ethnic background, social status, or gender. I am profoundly grateful for the chance to be a part of this inclusive and supportive community.

I would like to take a moment to acknowledge the other refugees or as we carry the title of students in humanitarian emergencies.”
