Jeffrey Wilson debates the perspectives of John Henry Newman and Aristotle at the FFCS

Jeffrey Wilson, Professor at the School of Philosophy of the Catholic University of America, gave two lectures on October 30 and 31 at the Aula Magna of the Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences (FFCS) of Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP) - Braga.

Professor Wilson presented two lectures entitled, respectively, Newsman's Groundwork for a Post Humean Realist Metaphysics and Communities of Transmission: The Texts of Aristotle from Antiquity to the Renaissance.

The first discussed the perspective of the philosopher and cardinal John Henry Newman (1801-1980), in his 'Grammar of Assent'. This talk was moderated by Álvaro Balsas, a professor at the FFCS and researcher at the Centre for Philosophical and Humanistic Studies (CEFH).

On the second day, Jeffrey Wilson discussed a text in which he addressed the 'miraculous' survival and transmission of the corpus Aristotelicum over the centuries. The lecture ended with a reflection on the fragility of philosophical texts and the impact that the digital age could have on the dissemination of knowledge to future generations, especially the threats this could entail. On this day, the talk was moderated by Bruno Nobre, a professor at the FFCS and researcher at the CEFH.
