Seminar: "The European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity"

Friday, May 17, 2019 - 16:00 - Friday, May 17, 2019 - 17:30

Sala EA226 | UCP | Centro Regional do Porto

Speaker: Ana Sofia Carvalho, researcher at the Bioethics Institute.

Following the remarkable progress made by national scientists, their productivity and their participation in international projects, establishing clearly defined rules of conduct on matters of scientific integrity has become an urgent priority.

Hence, the Universidade Católica Portuguesa Porto Regional Centre has organised this conference about the European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity in order to raise awareness of this important document among all researchers.

Applications open for PhD in Bioethics

The applications for the 6th edition of the PhD in Bioethics of the Instituto de Bioética of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa are now open. Applications end on December 30.

  • Applications: until December 30, 2021
  • Interviews: from January 10 to 14, 2022
  • Enrolment: from January 17 to 21, 2022
  • Start of classes: January 27, 2022

This PhD Programme aims at critical reflection taking into account the fundamentals of Bioethics, based on the development of scientific maturity and capacity to investigate and produce science in an autonomous, responsible and original way.

The PhD programme in bioethics is coordinated and taught by experts in bioethics and related fields (health sciences, health policies, research in health sciences and services, among others), who will provide an excellent training path for future bioethicists. This programme is unique for the opportunities it will give students to conduct empirical research in bioethics.

The classes of this edition will take place in person at the facilities of the Católica Medical School in Sintra, on Thursdays, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., and Fridays, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

For more information, you can contact: espacodocandidato.sede@ucp.pt or secretariaescolar.sede@ucp.pt.

You can request a meeting with the coordinator of the PhD: Professor Sandra Martins Pereira

All information about the programme and applications is available here.

Bioethics as a place of interdisciplinarity

Monday, January 25, 2021 - 12:00 - Monday, January 25, 2021 - 13:00

Online

The next session of the Laudato si' Year at Universidade Católica Portuguesa is dedicated to Bioethics as a place of interdisciplinarity. This session will be led by Professor Bruno Nobre, Coordinator of the Centre for Philosophical and Humanistic Studies, who will explore the theme "Bioethics and integral ecology"; by Dr. Pablo Hernández-Marrero, Researcher at the Research Centre in Management and Economics and at the Instituto de Bioética, who will reflect on the theme "Global Bioethics: problems, answers, human rights and ethical discourse"; and by Dr. Sandra Martins Pereira, Dean of the Instituto de Bioética and Main Researcher FCT of the Research Centre in Management and Economics, who will focus on the theme "ethics of care in the relationship with the sick and/or vulnerable person".

The Laudato si' encyclical is an exhortation calling for a global bioethical approach. This session will build bridges between different pathways and areas of knowledge in order to develop a truly interdisciplinary perspective on the ethical issues applied to human health and life, at individual, population and global levels. In the words of the Pope, "We need to reinvigorate the awareness that we are one human family. There are no borders or political or social barriers that allow us to isolate ourselves, and therefore there is no room for the globalisation of indifference either". (Laudato si', 52).

Registration is free and is available through this link.

Mara de Sousa Freitas: "Health for all, a path, a horizon: bioethics"

7 April 2023 is World Health Day. This date marks the anniversary of the founding of the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1948, and this year, in addition to highlighting the importance of "achieving health for all", the celebration of WHO's 75th anniversary is an opportunity to remember the journey towards continuous improvement in public health and quality of life. This year's theme, Health for All, takes us back to the Ottawa Charter, adopted at the First International Conference on Health Promotion in November 1986. The search, as the charter states, "for a response to the growing expectations for a new public health" and for "health for all in the year 2000" - a persistent question, a path to be followed, a horizon to be attained.

On this horizon - achieving Health for All - what is the importance of bioethics?

Health is a complex construction shared and experienced by, for and with people. It concerns processes experienced and inserted in a singular life context, with multiple determinants requiring integrated and holistic responses. Health is materialised in the care that each person has for themselves and others; in the ability to exercise their autonomy and make choices, to be able to judge the data of a given situation or behaviour and know how to choose in their best interest, but also, whenever necessary, considering the common good, with independence, judgement and knowledge.

Health requires access, distribution and allocation of resources, and the sharing of rights, duties and responsibilities among citizens, civil society, health professionals, political leaders and actors. Health requires justice, equity, fairness, cooperation and solidarity. Creating more and better health for all is an expression of respect and responsibility for present and future generations, as it places care at the heart of human vulnerability.

Bioethics is therefore the necessary and urgent knowledge in the face of the multiple challenges and horizons for health. To acquire this horizon it is necessary "to learn to see beyond what is close, too close, not to look away, but to see better, in a wider set and in more current proportions" (1). Bioethics in the analysis of the issues raised by the development of new technologies applied to life and health sciences - but also in the ethical analysis of the multiple issues of management, practice, and strategic health planning, in Portugal - plays a core role, as it may contribute to solutions that effectively serve the needs of people and society, that (re)affirm human values and ethics as a "practical science" - it is urgent to see beyond what is near, it is urgent to think and act with (Bio)Ethics.

Bioethics is, in the original words, respect for "every living being, on principle as an end in itself (Fritz Jahr, 1927); It is the bridge to the future, based on a new wisdom, that of knowing how to use the (new) knowledge for the survival of man and for the best quality of life (Potter, 1971), so, on the path to this horizon, celebrated and acclaimed today - and so necessary - we need Bioethics and people trained in bioethics, we need to train people in this knowledge, cultivate science and research with social and scientific value, we need to promote good practices in health, the ethics of health and, in this way, renew the country, through excellence and by example.

As a corollary, I recall the words of Susan Sontag (2) on citizenship, she tells us that "everyone who is born holds dual citizenship, in the kingdom of the well and in the kingdom of the sick. Although we all prefer to use the good passport, sooner or later each of us is obliged, at least for a spell, to identify ourselves as citizens of that other place", thus, to achieve Health for All, the continuous improvement of public health and quality of life, it is necessary that this is an issue that concerns everyone and that everyone has an important role to play, "we must understand that we do not die because we are ill, we become ill because we are mortal" (Maurice Tubiana, 2000) (3).

ICONE - 5th International Conference on Neuroethics 2019

Monday, September 16, 2019 - 14:00 - Tuesday, September 17, 2019 - 09:00

Fundação Calouste Gulbekian | Lisboa

Health neuroscience is a new field that is at the interface of health and neuroscience. A chief goal of health neuroscience is not only to characterize bidirectional and dynamic brain-behaviour and brain-physiology relationships that are determinants, markers, and consequences of physical-health states across the life span. The motivation behind the ICONE is that a better understanding of ethics concerns will provide insights into how the brain links multilevel genetic, biological, psychological, behavioural, social, and environmental factors with physical health - especially vulnerability to and resilience against clinical illnesses.

ICONE5 has the pleasure to host the ENA-NET NEURON Midterm Session, which will bring a special dimension to the event.
